SV Manutara leaves Auckland, Linda holding Elwood the cat. Taken from an escorting yacht: SV Princess.

After running a charter company and travel agency in Auckland, Ray and Linda decided to try to sail around the world. It had been Ray's dream since he was 8 years old. After reading about Sir Francis Chichester and his epic adventures, Ray decided this was the way to experience real freedom.

On April 15th 2006, Manutara slipper her mooring at Bayswater Marina, and Ray, Linda and Elwood the cat set off on their adventure. First to sail around NZ, and if they could handle that, then around the world.

We travelled from Auckland to Tauranga, then to Gisborne via Hicks Bay. Then to Napier and on to Wellington. We crossed Cook Strait and spent an idyllic 8 weeks cruising the Marlborough Sounds.

Then on to our destination Akaroa via Lyttelton. We fell in love with Akaroa, the friendly people, Southern Hospitality and idyllic location. We intended to stay a week... and that was 3 years ago!

Now, in November 2009, we've done over 400 Akaroa Har bour Cruises. Still loving Akaroa and the good freinds we've made here.

Now Linda runs a B&B from our home: Acapella Lodge. We each take part in local community groups like Akaroa District Promotions and the Akaroa Heritage Festival Society, otherwise known as the Akaroa French Festival.

A-Class Sailing and our Carbon Footprint Zero Co2 and Greenhouse Gas Reduction Objectives

A-Class Sailing completed a Carbon Footprint calculation on 13th August 2009. This is calculated upon the total annual carbon emissions caused by our business over one year. It includes all vehicular travel on roads caused by our business and also carbon emissions from the auxiliary engine of SV Manutara while travelling to and from the wharf as well as the engine use during cruises, when no wind is available to power the ship. Calculated as follows:

Vehicular Car - 1.3 litre Toyota Funcargo - 1800km annually - 43.79 CO2-e (kg)
SV Manutara Diesel - 4 cylinder, 85hp Ford Marine Diesel- 72km annually - 8.6 CO2-e (kg)
Total carbon emissions are 52.39kg CO2-e

These emissions have been calculated online (here's a 'cut and paste' of the result from www.CarboNZero.co.nz):

The carboNZero travel & tourism calculator - emissions offset
Thank you for choosing to help the environment by offsetting your travel and tourism-related emissions.
Your emission total is: 52.39 CO2-e kg

Please note that the minimum purchase is 1 tonne CO2-e and all purchases are made in 1 tonne increments. Total Cost: $33.75

To achieve a lower Carbon Footprint, A-Class Sailing is committed to a three step process of Measuring and Managing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, then Mitigating its remaining unavoidable emissions.

Measuring GHG and Carbon Emissions:We measured A-Class Sailing's GHG emissions, or carbon footprint uning the carboNZero website, and understanding where emissions were coming from. Most of A-Class Sailing's emissions came from Vehicular Travel to Christchurch for Administrative or Repair and Maintenance purposes or use of the Vessel SV Manutara's auxiliary engine to travel to and from Akaroa's Main Wharf for charters, plus occasional use on windless days when sailing was not possible.
In addition some GHG's must result from the use of electricity for office operations, the use of paper products in the office, in marketing and advertising materials. A-Class Sailing then had to make a commitment to manage and reduce those emissions.

Managing GHG/CO2 emissions:Lower Carbon Footprint objectives are being achieved through a campaign to cut electricity and vehicular diesel emissions or usage by 25%, by energysharing with other SMEs and encouragement of car pooling with three other entities.

To reduce office emissions by paperless, electronic storage of information. In addition, a conscious effort to reduce paper output by minimising wasteage of marketing materials, pooling advertising with other entities and reducing print media advertising.

A-Class Sailing also switched it's promotional clothing to incorproate caps made from recycled PET plastic drink bottles.

Because A-Class Sailing buys its electricity from Meridian energy, which has carboNZero certification, no carbon credits were required to offset its electricity usage.

Mitigation of GHG/CO2: The remaining unavoidable Carbon Footprint emissions are planned to be offset through the purchase of a Pohutukawa Tree. This 30 year old tree is estimated to sequester/harvest 300kg of Co2E per annum. This gives A-Class Sailing more than enough Carbon Credits to offset the minor carbon emissions.

Verification Costs: A-Class Sailing's cost to participate in this scheme, for a carbon output annually of 0.073% of one tonne would be $2,100 once off, and a further $500 initially and every year thereafter. In addition, we would need to purchase sufficient carbon offsets annually which would mean we'd be buying over 14 times more carbon than we were using! Plainly a ridiculous waste of money. Upon this basis, we would have to increase our prices to cover these costs.

The minimum purchase in Carbon Offset Credits is 1 Tonne. Seeing that A-Class Sailing's total, measured annual carbon emissions are only 0.072% of a tonne, our actual annual carbon offset cost is only NZ$2.43 far below the minimum 1 tonne. It is our opinion that spending $33 for an actual $2.43 cost is enormously wasteful in itself. We therefore have purchased the carbon credits of a 30 year old Pohutukawa tree for this amount.

Carbon GHG Prognosis: A-Class Sailing's budget for carbon emissions in 2010, after reducing vehicular, electricity, and administrative emissions by 25%, is a total of no more than 54kg CO2-e. By changing our van, downsizing, with a far smaller vehicle, we effected a saving in excess of our target. How can we achieve better for 2012?

About the Classic Ocean Sailing Yacht: SV Manutara

Manutara is an 'A-Class' Keeler and Classic Yacht. Built in Kauri by Salthouse Bros and Jack Logan in Auckland NZ. In March 1953, Mike Tiller bought the Kauri tree that was to be used to build Manutara. It was forty-eight feet to the first limb and with a trunk circumference of twenty-one feet six inches at the base, giving a total of nine thousand two hundred linear feet. Because the tree was growing at the bottom of the gully it leant itself to first class boat-building material, being unspoiled by spreading limbs. At left is Mike Tiller, the first owner of Manutara, felling the single Kauri tree from which Manutara was built, in the forest at Paparoa, near Dargaville in 1953. Now she's a classic Kauri charter boat in Akaroa New Zealand. Akaroa NZ.
